Finished cattle trade marches on

The balance between supply and demand that has characterised the GB cattle trade recently has continued in the latest week. Retail demand is reported to be faring well, particularly for specific products being sold under specialised retail schemes. Reports suggest that cattle are being placed easily with processor requirements continuing to drive competition. This is compounded by the fact that the recent bout of fine weather could well have meant that some producers have been focusing on harvest activities rather than the selection of livestock.

Liveweight lamb market continues to weaken

Lamb prices at GB auction markets have continued their normal downward trend in the past week, but remain well above levels from 2015.

In the week ended 24 August, the GB SQQ fell by 8p compared to the previous week at 178.1p/kg, leaving prices 34p above the levels from the same week in 2015. Prices normally fall during the summer months as production rises. However, this year the favourable currency rate has meant that prices have remained above last year’s levels despite throughputs in recent weeks being above the levels from this time last year. Consistent falls were seen throughout the period, with price on Wednesday 24 August down by 10p on the week at 173.4p/kg.
