A World Trade Organization (WTO) panel has backed the European Union (EU) in the two-year dispute over Russia's ban on pig and pork imports from the bloc as “discriminatory” and violating WTO rules. Russia imposed the ban after cases of African Swine Fever (ASF) in some EU regions, invoking sanitary and phytosanitary measures allowed under WTO rules. EU pork exports to Russia were worth €1.4b in 2013, a quarter of total EU exports at the time. Each side has 60 days in which to appeal the findings, with Russia very likely to appeal. The final ruling may be issued by WTO in a year’s time with an appeal, we are looking at a resolution in 2018. The ban does not theoretically apply to pork fat and pig offal and, if the ASF dispute is resolved, shipments may resume.
