British Pig Executive Weekly Export Bulletin

The export team has been kept busy during the summer with the preparation of a lively series of events in the autumn. We kick off in Hong Kong (6-8 September) with the Restaurant & Bar show followed by a mission to West Africa (18-23 September – these two events are fully booked). We then head to China for three exhibitions: CIMIE (27-29 September), FHC (7-9 November) and Anufood Beijing (16-18 November). Due to importers’ demand, we are back to India (24-26 October). Of course, we sandwich in-between the all-important SIAL exhibition in Paris (16-20 October) with the English Meat Dinner taking place on Monday 17 October. British pig genetics will be represented at Eurotier in Hanover (16-18 November) as well as VIV China and the Kiev Pig Conference.


Boerenbond calls for better pork marketing in China
The European pork sector makes itself “vulnerable” in China due to a lack of differentiation as current trade is commodity-driven. The farmers’ organisation still laments the Russian ban on Belgian pork. The Belgian pork sector is 237% self-sufficient. (Source, Boerderij Vandaag)


In 2015, Cooperl results were reduced three fold, down to €5m from €15m in 2014. Turnover was stable at €2b including 35% from export. Cooperl invested €57m last year and its subsidiary Brocéliande, processing charcuterie products, benefited from €15m in its sites and achieved a turnover of €258m in 2015.

During the first semester of 2016, turnover of Fleury Michon decreased by 0.7% to €372m. Sales to supermarkets, representing 75% of the total, decreased by 3% to €315m. Sales of Fleury Michon branded charcuterie decreased by 0.8% and sales of prepared meals decreased by 2.5%. Other activities of the group continued including export, air-catering and lunch tray deliveries.

Origin of meat and milk ingredients
Should othe rigin labelling decree be published in August, it will be applicable from 1 November. Processors would have until March 2017 to sell products manufactured before 1 November that did not fulfil the new labelling requirements. Some processors and retailers believe 5 months is not long enough to sell the products. The publication of the decree will be followed by an “arrêté” which will determine the thresholds for the meat and milk content required in the products targeted by the new legislation. Although these thresholds have not been confirmed, they could reach 50% for charcuterie products and 5% for other products containing meat. A third meeting is scheduled at the end of August to confirm these thresholds. It should be noted that products manufactured in other EU member state will not have to follow the decree. French industry representatives requested that products labelled “Viande de France” (Meat from France) would be exonerated from the decree requirements as meat comes from animals born, reared, slaughtered and even processed in France. French authorities confirmed the dispensation would apply only to organic or PDO certified products, PGI products need to fulfil requirements of the decree.

Pork: According to “Le marché du Porc Breton”, the 56 TMP base price, at €1.46 per kg, showed a slight increase of €c0.1 last Monday at Plérin. Slaughter throughputs are fluid and the French market is stable. Last week, 361,095 pigs were slaughtered with an average weight of 100kg, marginally up on the week.
Piglets: Prices reported by IFIP were still increasing last week, the price for 25kg piglets increased by €c5 per head on the week.


Minister visits Tönnies
Minister Christian Schmidt visited Tönnies. The company, the largest meat processor in Germany, buys livestock from 20,000 farms. Animal welfare discussion were on the agenda. (Source, Boerderij Vandaag)

The available numbers of slaughter pigs in Germany is still comparably low, particularly in Southern regions of Germany. A number of producers report a further tightening of supplies and called for a further price increase. However, national sales on the meat market are below expectations and export enquiry has marginally eased from Asia over recent weeks. Therefore, slaughter facilities and meat traders demanded another week of unchanged prices. However, overall the German markets is roughly balanced and the recommended price remained unchanged at €1.66 per kg. (Source, AMI)


Markets across Europe are characterised by the holiday season. Fresh hams and shoulders traded slowly and unchanged or slightly lower prices due to holidays across Southern Europe. Other cuts are also traded slowly but at virtually unchanged price levels. For third-country markets, demand has been reported as quiet from both China and Japan in the latest week.


Export growth
Spanish Pork exports continued to perform strongly, both within the EU and to third-country markets. Cumulative exports in the January to May period were 23% higher than last year. Exports in May showed the strongest year-on-year growth, increasing by nearly 40% compared with the same month a year ago. (Source, Mercolleida)


Agricola Bacau invests
The Bacau based meat processor is investing €5m for a new salami plant in its main factory. MD, Grigore Horoi, says the investment is warranted by increased demand on the domestic market. The company, which is listed by all certifying bodies including BRC and IFS, exports a large proportion of its production to Western Europe. The Agricola Group has a turnover of €147m. Wholesale pork prices
Wholesale pork prices in Ukraine remained stable last week, the average pork wholesale price was UAH30.1 per kg (US$1.21 per kg). Market players predict prices to remain stable for at least another 2 weeks. (Source,

New ASF outbreak
Recently there have been several new outbreaks of the ASF registered in the Ukraine. On 27 July, laboratory tests confirmed ASF as the cause of death of pigs from a private household in Novoodeskiy region of Mykolayiv oblast. The local administration is taking measures to prevent further spread of the disease. Other outbreaks were registered in Sarvanskiy region, Baltskiy region and Ivanivskiy region of Odesa oblast. Additional restrictions
The Ministry of Agriculture and Food of Belarus has added an additional four Russian oblasts to the list that are prohibited to export pork and pigs to Belarus. Smolensk, Ryazan, Moscow and Tambov oblasts were added to the list due to recent ASF outbreaks. (Source,


EU and US negotiators clash on ractopamine
EU Trade Commissioner Ceclilia Malmstöm in response to questions from members of the EU Parliament reported that the EU ban of ractopamine and a number of hormones and growth promoters are not negotiable in discussions with the US on TTIP. The US side is also under pressure not to give way by producers and exporters. (Source, various)

Chipotle diversifies
Chipotle is entering the competitive US premium burger market under the brand “Tasty Made” with a first outlet in Lancaster, Ohio. The move was widely expected and ends speculation. Sales in the main Mexican-themed restaurants are still recovering from a slump in sales. Analysts have mixed views on this move, the first outside their successful Mexican formula. Strong progression of EU pork exports
In the first half of the year, imports from the EU rose 34% to 161,400 tonnes, led by increased Spanish shipments, a fact confirmed by NH Foods at the recent Meat Export Conference. Prices are also up a healthy 18%. Overall Japanese pork imports are up 13% to 428,800 tonnes. (Source, MAF)
