Cattle trade up again

The prime cattle trade moved up across the board again in week ended 9 July as the balance between supply and demand continues to be more favourable for producers. Reports are suggesting that retail demand is faring a little better on the back of bursts of sunshine and movements of sterling against the euro. Cattle were placed easily as processor requirements for cattle meeting supermarket specification in particular continued to be robust.

Lamb prices rise as the pound weakens

Liveweight lamb prices have continued to rise in the past week despite higher throughputs continuing as the pound has continued to weaken.

In the week ended 13 July, the GB SQQ was up by 7p on the previous week at 200.8p/kg. This left prices 44p higher than the same week in 2015, as price falls were seen at this point last year. This rise comes despite there being higher numbers coming to market in the past week. Prices at this time of year normally fall as increased numbers of lambs come to the market. However, this year, it seems that the current weakness of the pound following the outcome of the EU referendum has supported prices. Prices were up throughout the week, with the exception of Wednesday 13 July, when the GB SQQ was down by a penny on the previous week at 191.1p/kg. This is thought to have been due to the higher numbers coming to the market.
