Robust cattle trade for another week

Despite the upwards movement in the trade in recent weeks encouraging producers to market cattle, in the latest week ended 11 June prices moved up again. The GB all-prime average strengthened another 2p on the week earlier to average 321.0p/kg. Reports suggest that competition from processors is still robust and that waiting lists for scheme cattle have followed those for commercial types and have evaporated. The average R4L steer and heifer values both moved up another penny on the week at 333.3p/kg and 333.0p/kg, respectively. R3 young bulls moved up 2p to 321.0p/kg.

Liveweight lamb prices fall sharply while deadweight prices rise

New season lamb prices at GB auction markets have fallen sharply in the past week despite the number of throughputs declining in the same period. In the week ended 15 June, the new season liveweight GB SQQ was down by 17p on the previous week at 183.3p/kg. This left prices 5p below the level from the same week in 2015, the first time this has happened since mid-April. The largest declines were seen towards the end of the period, with the GB SQQ on Wednesday 15 June being 20p below the levels from the previous week at 175.1p/kg.
