British Pig Executive Weekly Export Bulletin

The Alimentaria fair that closed yesterday, presented the might of the Spanish meat sector to visitors from all over the world. Huge stands from Valls Companys, El Pozo, Campofrio, Grupo Jorge, Costa Brava and the presence of hundreds of meat companies, presented a very healthy picture of the Spanish pork processing sector. Increasingly, meat and wine are the major strengths of the fair which, following some leaner years, is now the showcase of Spanish food. Eight hundred buyers – some say more - from 78 countries were invited. For example, all Hong Kong major retailers were present and around 20 UK buyers had their trip paid to Barcelona. Three British pork processors were represented at the fair on the British Meat stand.

The pork mission to India finishes today and will be reported on next week. Also next week, British pork exporters and AHDB Pork will attend SIAL in Shanghai.

The evidence of a European two-tier market with, on one hand, plants approved for export to Mainland China and on the other, plants not approved, must not only take into account the different prices between Hong Kong and Mainland China but also the different types of products exported. Direct exporters to Mainland China now export legs, bellies and shoulders, hence the major increase of export prices. There are a number of figures circulating about the value of direct exports, ranging from €8 to €20 per pig.
