Lamb prices bounce back following Easter

Lamb prices in the past week have increased following the falls seen in the previous seven days.

In the week ended 30 March the GB SQQ was up by 3p to reach 189.6p/kg, with the shorter week and the position of Easter having an effect on trade. This left prices just 3p below levels from the same period a year earlier, the smallest gap so far in 2016. However, with Easter falling a week later in 2015, these comparisons should be treated with caution. The largest price increase was seen towards the end of the period with prices on 30 March reaching 191.3p/kg, 13p higher than the previous week. This follows tighter supplies due to the shorter week and some restocking following the Easter period.

Cattle trade falls short in a short week

Prime cattle prices for the week ended March 26 fell by a further 2.3p/kg, leaving the deadweight all prime average at 322.3p/kg. This continues the trend of cattle prices moving downwards seen since the beginning of 2016, with prices appearing to come under renewed downward pressure in the last two weeks. This follows from earlier weeks when the trade appeared to move down reluctantly during February and the beginning of March, when prime cattle prices falling by less than a penny each week. Consequently, this would suggest that supplies continue to outweigh demand.
