No change for the cattle trade

In week ended 27 February the deadweight prime cattle trade moved in the same direction as it has for a number of weeks and gently drifted down.

With a handful of processors reporting a four-day kill, possibly on the back of slow retail orders, fewer cattle were slaughtered in the week. Estimated at 30,700, almost 2,000 fewer cattle were processed, compared with the week earlier. Overall, the all prime price fell by another half a penny on the week to average 328.0p/kg.

Further increases seen in liveweight trade

The liveweight lamb trade strengthened further in the past seven days despite numbers coming to market increasing.

In the week ended 2 March the GB SQQ reached 187.1p/kg, up 2p on the previous week. However, larger increases seen in the same period last year meant that current prices have moved to 8p lower than the same week in 2015. Prices did begin to stabilise towards the end of the week, with the GB SQQ on Wednesday 2 March up by just 1p. Prices have risen despite higher numbers of lambs coming to the market and the pound stabilising against the euro in the past week, suggesting that domestic demand has increased.
