Liveweight lamb prices decline

Following several weeks where the liveweight lamb trade has been strengthening the price has fallen in the past week.

In the week ended 17 February the GB SQQ was down by 7p on the previous week at 183.2p/kg. This left prices 6p below levels seen in the same week in 2015, this follows the difference being at its lowest level since September last week. Prices fell throughout the week, with the sharpest decline seen in recent days. The SQQ on Wednesday 17th February was down by 6p on the previous week at 179.1p/kg.

Cattle trade finds a balance for now

Signs of stability which have become evident in the cattle trade since the end of January were once again confirmed for the week ended February 13.

Overall, prime cattle prices barely changed, achieving a price of 329.0p/kg. Steer prices remained relatively unchanged at 330.4p/kg, while heifers lost almost 2p during the week, declining to approximately 330.6p/kg. Similarly, in the Republic of Ireland the trade continues to be dominated by stability which has been present for much of the winter. There though, unlike the GB market, heifers are continuing to demand a premium of 10-15 cents per kilo over their steer counterparts.
