Total chicken population as of July 1, 2014 was 172.41 million birds, down 2.50% compared to last year’s head count. Broiler chicken inventory stood at 64.70 million birds, down 3.16% compared to the 2013 level. Region III (Central Luzon) had the highest broiler inventory with a total share of 31.37% in the country’s total broiler inventory. Region IV-A (CALABARZON) shared 17.51% and Region X (Northern Mindanao), at 12.98%. These three (3) regions contributed 61.86% to the country’s total broiler inventory.

Likewise, layer chicken inventory at 29.23 million birds dropped by 7.40% compared with its headcount in the same period last year. The number of laying flock expected to lay eggs in Q3 2014 decreased by 9.39%. The top three (3) producing regions in terms of layer inventory were Region IV-A (CALABARZON) with 39.07% share, Region III (Central Luzon) with 22.99% share and Region X (Northern Mindanao) with 10.93%t share. The inventory of the top three regions comprised 73% of the country’s total layer headcount.

Native/improved chicken at 78.48 million birds increased by 0.04% against last year’s level of 78.45 million birds. The top producing region for native/improved chicken was Region VI (Western Visayas) with 16.47% share to the total native chicken inventory. The other major producing regions were Region X (Northern Mindanao) with 9.77% share and Region III (Central Luzon) with 9.30% share. All together, these regions accounted for 35.09% of the country’s native chicken inventory.

The total volume of chicken production in the first half of 2014 was estimated at 777.30 thousand metric tons, an increase of 2.24% from same period last year. Quarter 1 and Q2 2014 chicken production posted 2-3% mainly contributed by broiler chicken. In the first six months of 2014, chicken egg production went down by 4.18%. The extreme weather condition greatly affected the chicken egg production particularly in Q2 because of low egg-laying efficiency from commercial farms. The first six months of 2014 showed negative growth of around 5% in commercial egg production and a slight decrease of 1% in native egg output.

The total volume of chicken meat imports in the first half of 2014 was recorded at 40,400 tons. This corresponded to a drop of 7.39% compared with 2013 importation.
