Pig numbers up 0.2%
Figure 1 The total number of pigs in Ireland in June 2014 was estimated at 1,554,700. This represents an increase of 0.2% since June 2013. See Table 1.
The number of breeding pigs was up 2.5%, while non-breeding pig numbers were down by 0.1% in the same period. A comparison of the June 2013 and June 2014 figures (see Table 1) shows that in the breeding category the number of:
- Other sows for breeding increased by 13.2%.
- Gilts not yet served increased by 4.1%.
- Boars decreased by 13.1%.
