BPEX Export Bulletin - Week 36
BPEX, alongside EBLEX, participated for the second time in the Restaurant & Bar show in Hong Kong with a strong offering of premium pork, bacon, sausages and Melton Mowbray pork pies. The very busy show dedicated to the Hong Kong food service sector attracted more than 18,000 visitors. For the first time, three importers collaborated with BPEX and exporters on the stand. Following the introduction of these products over the last eighteen months, we are now increasing volume and penetration on this very competitive market where organic Danish pork is our main competitor.Denmark
Still supply issues for Danish Crown
The number of pigs slaughtered in Denmark is forecast to fall by another 440,000 (– 2.3%) this year. In addition, Danish Crown has to compete for supplies with Tönnies’ Brørup. In contrast, the number of weaners produced in Denmark is up to 29.5m but so are live exports which are expected to top 10m.

Listeria in cooked sausage
Listeria in sliced Rollerpølse (Cooked pork roll) from the firm Jørn has led to 12 deaths and 20 people hospitalised.

Germany
New markets are the key
The German agro-food industry is now very active in finding alternative exports markets to replace Russian exports. For pork, China, Singapore and Africa are quoted.

Germany exported €9.5 bn. worth of meat in 2013 representing 28.9% of all food exports.

Vion food service strategy
Vion plans to increase its food service sales by 20% over the next three years. The company is gearing up its FVZ-Westfood Convenience plant in Holzwickede near Dortmund for added value lines. Food service is described as one of the three core competencies of restructured Vion, alongside slaughter and cutting.

Decline of pig slaughter
In the first half of the year, 28.645m pigs were slaughtered in Germany (-1.8%).

Netherlands
Research investment
Wageningen UR has invested €12m in a new experimental animal breeding unit with a particular focus on pigs. Current research programmes include piglet studies.

Communication
Activities at the yearly “pig day” when pig farms open to the public will be fewer this year due to a smaller budget. In contrast, the Dutch pig museum www.varkensmuseum.nl is doing well with 10,000 visitors per year. The establishment presents the production of live pigs.

Environment subsidies
The government is providing €4.5m of subsidies for “innovative projects destined to lower ammonia emissions” in pig, poultry and dairy units.

Poland
New ASF outbreak
The Polish authorities have in the past week reported a new case of African swine fever in wild boar close to the border with Belarus. Poland and the Baltic countries currently have an exclusion zone alongside the Russian border.

Lithuania
Russian woes
Lithuania is suffering the most from the Russian blockade of European food imports. For meat, this represents a loss of €73m and €58m for the dairy sector, huge sums for a small country.

Spain
Valls continues its expansion
The Catalan integrator signed an agreement with Jamones Nicolau in Cheste (Valencia) and has taken over Rubiato Paredes, an important meat supplier to Madrid food service.

Spanish prices holding
The annual summer hike is holding, with prices still around €1.90 /kg which is much higher than Northern European prices hovering around the €1.60 mark. Spanish pork prices peaked in July at €1.949.

Ukraine
ASF in Chernihivska oblast
Pigs infected with the ASF were detected in a private household in Koriukivsky region Chernihivska oblast. The sick animals were culled and a 4km quarantine zone was introduced around the village. Local authorities are taking measures to prevent the spread of the disease. Belarus had already banned Ukrainian pork.

Russia
Russia will lift the ban for meat import from Mongolia
After the meeting with Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj, the President of Mongolia, Vladimir Putin, the President of the Russian Federation, declared that in the nearest future the Russian government will lift the ban for import of meat from this country.

Average July pork price
The Federal Service of State Statistics of Russia reported that the average July wholesale price for boneless pork was RUB 338.69/kg (£5.58/kg) up RUB 4.12/kg (£0.07) on June.

Philippines
Code change
Pork lacones (long cut fore trotters) have been reclassified as pork instead of offal, therefore attracting a higher level of duty – 30% in quota, 40% out of quota instead of 10%.

USA
Record profits for producers
According to Iowa State University, a typical pig farmer in Iowa in July this year generated record revenues of US$107.25 per pig. This is $14.21 higher than the record set in the previous month. This is helped by lower supplies, down 9.7% on July 2013 and higher slaughter, weights up 4.8kg to 128.1kg carcase weight.

Hilshire taken over by Tyson
The poultry processor owns the Jimmy Dean sausage brand and is the third largest sow meat processors, with its two abattoirs with 14,000 heads per week. The largest sow slaughterers are Johnsonville with 17,000 heads per week and Pine Ridge with 16,000 heads per week.

WH to export to Russia
WH now has two listed plants and is looking to start exporting pork to Russia. The Russians are looking to approve a further five Chinese plants.

Hong Kong
Animal welfare concerns
Animal welfare issues are increasingly aired by Hong Kong media. There is no specific animal welfare legislation in Hong Kong beyond an animal cruelty ordnance and a public health law from the 1970s. In contrast, Taiwan has modern animal welfare legislation.
