With pork exports up 16.6% to 15,300 tonnes in the month of June, overall exports for the first half of the year are up a healthy 10.6% to 94,700 tonnes. We may well break through the 200,000 tonnes barrier, setting a new record for the percentage of production exported. Exports to Continental Europe (Denmark, Italy, France) are particularly pleasing.

New outbreaks of African swine fever have taken place in Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Belarus and Russia that show no abatement of the crisis.


More pork exports

Serbia is expected to benefit from the various Russian bans with higher pork exports. However, according to our sources, there are still major technical hurdles and trade barriers for the Serbs to overcome to become a major supplier to Russia.

The future of GAD

Although SVA has confirmed their interest in taking over GAD, there are still a lot of unanswered questions and Dominique Langlois, CEO of SVA needs more information before a decision can be made. A decision could be made by the end of August but is more likely to be early in September. On 19 August union representatives (CGT and CFDT workers unions) of Gad met with the French Minister of Agriculture who confirmed that a solution should come within the next fortnight and Minister Stéphane Le Foll also said he will do his best to ensure a future for GAD and their employees. GAD currently slaughter 24,000 pigs weekly with a capacity for 30,000. The company could go into receivership and employment for most casual employees (100 to 200) would cease by the end of August. Mr. Le Foll also said that some measures to support the French pig meat industry should be announced before the autumn.


Pigs: According to Le marché du porc Breton, “activities for processing will have been at full capacity after 15 August, supported by the imminent start of the school year.” For the moment, demand is moderate, due to slow activity around Europe and supplies are sufficient due to the short bank holiday week. The 56 TMP base price eased by €c0.4 cent last Monday.

Piglets: Prices for piglets at market are still decreasing, more or less depending on the quality, region and the operators. FNP-FNCBV prices lost €c2 for 25kg weaners and €c35 for 8 kg piglets.

Pig census results

Statistics Denmark has published the results of the July pig census based on a sample of approximately 2,500 farms. The results show the total pig population of Denmark has increased by 1.8% compared with a year ago. The number of weaned pigs (less than 50kg) increased by 3.0% year-on-year. However, the number of finishers (over 50kg) fell by 2.0%, reflecting the growth of the piglet export market. The number of in-pig sows increased by 1.5% on the year.

On European markets, fresh hams and other cuts traded at similar price levels to last week, although the market is reported to be somewhat under pressure. The UK bacon market is reported as quiet with unchanged market activity. Good volumes are reportedly being currently traded to the Asian markets, notably to China and Japan.

German pig market balanced

Within the last week, the availability of slaughter pigs increased slightly throughout most of Germany. As a result of the holiday period coming to close, particularly in northern regions, pork sales are reported to have increased slightly although at lower values than anticipated. Overall, the German pig market is almost balanced and the recommended price remained unchanged at €1.63 per kg. Over the coming weeks, an increase in the demand for slaughter pigs and pork cuts is predicted as the summer holidays come to an end. Although colder weather could result in higher demand for beef as the barbecue season ends.

Tello look for alternative markets

Grupo Tello will commit to alternative markets as a measure to curb losses caused by the Russian restrictions. The Russian market represented a turnover of more than €2m annually for the company.

Fall of meat consumption

For May 2014 against May 2013, retail sales of fresh and processed meats were down respectively by 4.7% and 7%, a major fall. In contrast, overall food sales are up 1.2% in volume although the average food price is down 3%.

Catalonia produces 42% of Spanish production

Last year Catalonia slaughtered 18.4m pigs and produced 1.5m tonnes of meat. In 2013 the region exported €1,898m of pig meat.

Prices still holding

The effect of the Russian ban on Canada – the main exporter affected by the ban – has so far been limited to some drop of leg prices. However, there has been no destabilisation of the market and overall prices remain firm. Nonetheless, the Russian ban is expected to cut 5-7c per kg to Canadian pork prices, according to the Saskatchewan Pork Producers Association.

Chinese and Indian pork

Sergey Dankvert, Head of Rosselkhoznadzor, says that Chinese and Indian suppliers of pork and beef will replace EU, US, Australian and Canadian imports to the Russian market. Mr. Dankvert says that the far east of Russia was dependent on supplies of meat from the USA and Canada but now Rosselhoznadzor is negotiating with the Veterinary Service of China regarding pork supplies from large Chinese producers. India, meanwhile, offers beef to the Russian Federation, which could replace Australian beef on the Russian market. Federal Customs Service data shows that in 2013 Russia imported 619,800 tonnes of pork with the largest pork suppliers being Brazil, Denmark, Germany and Canada.

Restrictions lifted for Brazilian companies

On 18 August, Rosselkhoznadzor lifted the ban for pork import to the Russian Federation for five Brazilian enterprises: Mataboi, Frigoestrela, Marfrig, Agra, and Cotriji. Rosselkhoznadzor warned the suppliers that they will have to pay extra attention to the quality of meat and give up using ractopamine, otherwise the meat will not be allowed on the Russian market.

New ASF outbreaks

New ASF outbreaks were registered in Zaokskiy, Suvorovskiy, Dubenskiy and Odoevskiy regions of Tulksaya oblast. For reference, the largest ASF outbreak was registered in the oblast in February 2014 when 57,000 pigs were slaughtered in the Lazorevskoye pig breeding complex.


Globino gets a loan

The EBRD (European Bank for Reconstruction and Development) is lending Globino, the leading Ukrainian sausage producer, £7.5m to help with its current liquidity problems. The EBRD lent £17m in 2011 to the concern in order to modernise the meat plant (Globinski Meat Plant LLC) and its pig complex.

Herd increase

Hungary has increased its pig herd for the first time since 2008. More piglets, more pigs and a “little” increase in sow numbers are reported, with a total increase of 200,000 pigs on the year. However, at this level the population is still 1.2m less than at the time of entry into the EU in 2004.

Herd decrease

In the last two years the Belarusian pig herd has dropped by 36% (18% lower in 2014 compared with 2013). Numbers have fallen from 4.2m animals in 2012 to only 2.7m in early 2014.

Truein invests

The group based in Zhaonan City (Jilin) is investing £122m in a new pork processing facility with production capacity for 4m pigs per year. Some £30m of working capital is also provided.
