Animal feed sales

According to SNIA (Association of animal feed manufacturers) and the Coop de France, production of animal feed mixes decreased by 2.8% in volume in May 2014 compared with May 2013. This decrease is mainly due to the drop in pig feed production calculated at -6.7% and -7.6% for special pig finishing mixes. These figures confirm the predicted trend for 2014 where only turkey feed production is on the rise.

The presence of Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea (PEDv) in the USA and Canada has pushed French authorities to take precautionary measures regarding imports of pedigree animals and plasma. IFIP produced four leaflets dedicated to PEDv with details of biosecurity measures that should be taken on farms. These documents are available on

Pigs: Operators have been very prudent with their purchases, both in terms of slaughter volumes and prices. The moderate number of pigs (9,900 head) presented at Marché du porc Breton last Monday easily covered requirements. The 56 TMP base price eased by €c1.1.

Piglets: Although piglet availability is good for 25kg weaners and weaning piglets, they continue to sell with some difficulty depending on the region and quality. Last week, FNP-FNCBV prices lost €c2 for 25kgs weaners and €c36 for post-weaning piglets.

Cuts: The market is stable on the whole and reported as good in holiday regions, although the market is lower in big cities. Sales should be better at the beginning of August and the return of sunny weather across France.
