USDA International Egg and Poultry: International Long-Term Projections to 2023
World poultry (broiler and turkey) production is projected to reach 119.4 million metric tons (MMT) by 2023, up 31.6% compared to 90.7 MMT in 2012. World poultry meat trade is projected to increase 31.3%, from 10.8 MMT compared to 14.2 MMT in 2023.
Of the top producing countries, between 2012 and 2023 U.S. poultry production is projected to increase 24.5%, Brazil 40.1%, China 33.4% and the EU 7.4%. Poultry production is projected to increase 102.1% in India, from 3.16 MMT in 2012 to 6.38 MMT in 2023, and 45.2% in Russia, from 2.93 MMT to 4.26 MMT. While the general trend is towards increased poultry production, poultry production is projected to decline 0.7% in Egypt (from 733,000 MT to 728,000 MT) and drop 6.1% in Taiwan (from 578,000 MT to 543,000 MT).

China and Mexico are projected to increase imports 50% and 82% respectively from 2012 to 2023. Russia, the EU and Japan are projected to import less poultry during this period.

In 2012 the top four exporting countries accounted for an 88% share of world poultry exports. By 2023 that percentage will decline to 83%. Brazil and the U.S. will continue to be the top exporting countries. In 2012, Brazil and the U.S. both had a 34% share of world poultry exports. By 2023, Brazil’s share is projected to remain at 34%; the U.S. share will drop to 30%. The EU’s share will decline from 11% in 2012 to 7% in 2023 while Thailand’s share will climb from 5% to 7%. China’s share of poultry exports will remain unchanged at 4%.
