Key points

The key results for June 2014 are given below:

  • UK commercial layer chick placings were up 15% to 3.4 million chicks compared with June 2013. This indicates a future expansion in the size of the laying flock, once these chicks have matured into laying birds.

  • The number of turkey eggs set in hatcheries and number of turkey poults which were placed for rearing have both reduced year on year by 7% and 17% respectively. This suggests reduced availability of turkeys in the coming months.

  • UK broiler slaughterings were unchanged on a year earlier at 70 million birds.

  • Total UK poultry meat production was 125 thousand tonnes, 1% lower than in June 2013.
