BPEX has unveiled its export marketing programme for the second half of the year. The programme includes shows in Hong Kong (Restaurant & Bar, 2-4 September), Mumbai (Annapoorna, 24-26 September), Shanghai (FHC, 12-14 November) and Beijing (26-28 November). The programme also features a presence at Eurotier, Hanover (11-14 November), a mission to the Philippines (29 September - 2 October), the Great Week in China and Hong Kong (November) and the annual British Meat Dinner, this year in Paris on 20 October.

Charcuterie sales

During the first quarter of the year, the clear winners for charcuterie were Merguez sausages sold at traditional butcher’s counters. They increased in volume by 21% and at €9.20 per kg the value increased by 9.7% compared with the same period last year. In second place was dry ham, also sold on traditional counters, volume increased by 14.1% and in third position came pre-packed bacon (French type) increasing by 11.4% in volume terms. The losers were “andouillettes”, down 18.3% in volume, “andouilles” fell by 13.7% and large coarse fresh sausages at traditional counters fell by 10%.


Dominique Bigard, head of Maurer, will re-focus its activities on the Kingersheim site with his two brands: Maurer for baked charcuteries sold at traditional counters and Tempé for pre-packed charcuterie products sold on the shelf. The group is still weakened following the acquisition of Tempé (30 shops) and will have to cut 48 jobs out of a total of 370 which includes 210 in production.


Pigs: Firm prices have returned to Europe. On Wednesday, Germany maintained its reference price. The Belgian base price gained €c1 and in Denmark the price increased by €c2.7. Southern Europe took advantage of the trend in Northern European of firmer prices. The Spanish base price gained €c1.1. In Italy, the base price increased by €c5.1 on the Modena market. The beginning of the month, anticipated sunnier weather and with limited production, market conditions are liable to continue to support prices. Nevertheless, we’ll have to keep a close eye on the export market.

Piglets: Between stable demand and limited supplies, the tendency for European prices oscillated between decrease for Spain, stability for Belgium and Netherlands and an increase for Denmark.

Fewer Danish pig herds

Statistics Denmark has published data from the 2013 agricultural survey which shows continued structural development. The number of farms with pigs decreased from 4,181 herds in 2012 to 3,581 in 2013.

Approval for Danish Crown acquisition

This week, the European Commission approved the Danish Crown 100% takeover of the Polish company Sokolow.

The German owned Broerup Slaughterhouse grows

Last year, Tönnies Fleisch increased slaughterings in Denmark by 25%. The Broerup Slaughterhouse receives nearly 1.5m pigs annually. The location plays an important role for the Tönnies group, operating from Denmark means Tönnies can supply a number of important export markets. The aim is to increase throughputs to 1.8m pigs. Tönnies pays a higher price than Danish Crown. In 2012, the German group lost €18m in Denmark, a profit is predicted this year.

Bornholm does not close

Danish Crown realised it would be a disaster for the island of Bornholm if the slaughterhouse there closes and, therefore, will remain open. Danish Crown has not achieved the desired cost savings at the site. An investment company will be established led by Danish Crown and the employees. The government will contribute €200,000 and implement tax changes to enable employees to invest wages before tax.

Plan against MRSA

The Danish government now requires clothes to be changed and hands to be washed when leaving pig housing to prevent the spread of MRSA. The new regulations also make it mandatory for farms to have an infection protection plan. The Ministry of Food, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, has established a new MRSA service, where healthcare professionals will advise people working with pigs.

On European markets, fresh legs are sold at slightly higher prices. The market for collars and shoulders is under pressure while the market for loins and bellies remains unchanged. Trade to third-country markets is reported as stable.

More Vion disposals

Vion Foods last week announced that it has sold its German Convenience Retail division to a consortium of private investment companies, Munich-based Paragon Partners and Jara Holding. Jara Holding comprises well-known operators Jürgen Abraham and Norbert Barfuss. The division had a turnover of €435m. Vion will now focus on core activities such as cattle and pig slaughtering and the convenience food service in 7 manufacturing plants, 29 branches, 9 fresh meat centers and 3 meat markets. The sale also includes a variety of labels such as Lutz, Weimar, Nocker, Artland, Vegetaria and Heiter and activities will be merged under the historic (1891) and highly regarded Lutz Fleischwaren brand.

Even more Vion disposals

Vion is closing its small pig and cattle abattoir in Welden, Bavaria. This was one of a string of small abattoirs purchased with Süd Fleisch in 2006. With Linden in April, Vion has now closed two plants this year. In 2013, Vion closed three plants: Weimar, Minden and Lausitz.

Live exports on the rise

Exports of weaners and slaughter pigs to Poland, Hungary and Romania are rising fast. Some 806,000 pigs were exported in the first quarter of the year.

Minor price increase

The German pig market is currently split, a market for slaughter pigs and the meat market. Most producers are calling for price increases due to low pig numbers and slightly firmer demand for slaughter pigs and barbecue meat. The comparably low numbers enabled producers to increase the recommended price by €3c per kg to €1.71 per kg. On the other hand, slaughter facilities highlight low prices for several pork cuts (especially fats and by-products) and the lack of a slaughter day next week. Most report that they were not able to recover the €c8 price increase two weeks ago from meat sales.

Berger’s solid performance

Turnover of the Austrian leader of the ham sector rose to €125m in 2013 for a volume of 25,800 tonnes. The company is developing a regional concept of GM-free pork production.

New interprofession

The Portuguese pork sector is now organised under an interprofession, linking all associations in the sector from compound feeds to meat processing called FILPOC. This is a positive step for the struggling and disorganised Portuguese industry. This move is very much backed by the government which has enacted laws to organise the agricultural markets.

Pork sector performing well

The pork sector has grown by 16% against the base line of the Food Harvest 2020 target, showing the best performance of all Irish agricultural sectors. For reference, the Irish are tabling a growth of 50% of pork output by 2020.

Rosderra contracts pig finishing

The Irish processor which owns 5,000 sows is offering 10-year finishing contracts in order to be able to expand its production base at existing sites. Rosderra accounts for 53% of Irish pork output and now employs 984 staff. Its Edenderry plant slaughters 17,000 pigs per week and a further 12,000 pigs per week in Roscrea. It also operates a specialty meats facility in Clara, Co. Offaly, a curing plant in Jamestown Co Leitrim and a cooked meat facility in Stradone, Co. Cavan.

Irish slaughter share

Rosderra remains the dominant processor in Ireland with 52-53% of throughput, ahead of Dawn with 20%, Stauntons with 12%, Green Pastures with 8% and McCarren with 8%.

New cases of ASF

Two separate outbreaks of African Swine Fever (ASF) were detected in four wild boars in the Podlaskie region near the Belarus border. This is disappointing with regard to possible Russian reactions but not unexpected in view of the continuing epidemic in Eastern Europe as seen below.

Major floods

The consequence on livestock of the worst floods in 120 years that have affected Serbia, Bosnia and parts of Croatia where 40 people lost their lives and 100,000 houses flooded are unclear. Most pigs were evacuated to high ground.

Pork deficit

ASF has decimated pig stocks by 20% across the country, with some small farms losing 50% of their stock. This is creating a pork shortage according to Finance Minister Nicholas Snapkou.

Ministry support pig breeding

On 3 June, Ihor Shvaika, the Minister of the Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, spoke at the official opening of the Profitable Pig Breeding XI International Congress. In his speech, he stressed that one of the priorities for Ukrainian agriculture is development of the pig breeding field and increasing pork export sales.


Pig import suspension

Rosselkhoznadzor introduced temporary restrictions on the import of live pigs from the USA, Canada, Mexico, Japan, South Korea and the SAR to prevent the threat of epidemic diarrhea infection.

Forecasts pig population increase

According to forecasts made by the board of the National Union of Pig Breeders, in the 2014-2020 period, domestic pork production is predicted to increase by 1m tonnes which will satisfy 85% of the domestic requirement for pork. It will be necessary to attract investment from independent sources and states to achieve this growth.

New breeding unit

By the end of 2014, a new pig-breeding facility will have been built in Taranai, Sakhalinskaya oblast. The facility is being developed for the breeding of 12,000 pigs and its production capacity will be 944 tonnes of pork and 200 tonnes of by-products per year. Pig population increase

According to the official statistics, the pig population in Kazakhstan at the end of April 2014 reached 1,019,500 pigs, 2.9% higher than in March 2014 but 18.6% less than in March 2013.


Great Lakes goes under

The Mitchell, Ontario-based pork plant has been placed in receivership following Toronto Abattoir and Quality Meat Packers bankruptcy last month. Great Lakes and Quality are both owned by David Schwarz. Great Lakes Specialty Meats employs 150 staff and slaughters 5,000 pigs per week.

Funds for pork research

A large part of this £7m government award involves investigations on the nutritional quality of pork. Meanwhile, the universities of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Laval and Guelph are developing a meat science degree, a first for Canada with 50 students over the next three years taking part.

Repeat outbreaks of PEDv

A farm from Indiana reported the first publicly recorded repeat PEDv by the American Association of Swine Veterinarians. The disease killed 30% of the piglets. The disease seems to recur in about 30% of infected farms.

World Pork Expo

The Des Moines show will still take place despite the threat of PEDv. A PEDv summit will take place during the fair. The event is now much smaller than in the past. One thing that is expanding is the junior pig showing with 1,800 youngsters displaying their skills with their favourite pig. In total, 20,000 visitors and 375 exhibitors are expected, including a small UK representation.

More GMO-free food

According to Hartman research conducted in 2013, 33% of consumers avoid GMO products, up from 15% in 2007. Accordingly, sales of GMO-free food are growing rapidly in the USA. There are now laws governing what is GMO-free food and food manufacturers rely on voluntary guidelines.


New listing for JBS?

JBS has notified its interest in the listing of its pork, poultry and processed foods activities within the subsidiary JBS Foods on the Brazilian Novo Mercado stock exchange in Sao Paulo. Date of IPO and information on the size of the IPO is yet to be revealed, although the best guess estimates it will be sometimes between July and late September. The IPO seems to be part of a major restructuring of the highly indebted company, following JBS’s acquisition last year of the pork and poultry activity of Brazilian competitor Seara at a price of $2.7b.

Losses in February due to PEDv fell to 40,000 heads, down from 70,000 in January. Still, operators do not expect a fall of pork prices from their current level of £1.57 per kg live weight.

Over a 10-day promotion, 7 tonnes of US pork was sold by Internet site Tmall. The US Meat Export Federation and Tmall are now exploring further collaboration, following positive feedback.

Vissan expansion plans

The major Hanoi-based processor plans invested £2m in its plant in the Northern Bac Ninh province. It is also on course to construct a 22ha meat complex in the Southern Long An province with an investment of £60m. The complex will be able to slaughter 360 pigs, 60 cows and 5,000 birds per hour with an output of 75,000 tonnes of processed meat.

CP opens new sausage factory

Charoen Pokphand Foods Plc (CPF) plans for a new sausage production plant to be located in Nakhon Ratchasima province in the north eastern region and products to be produced at this facility will be for both the local and export markets. CPF produces around 75,000 tonnes of sausages per year out of its Minburi plant outside Bangkok and its factory in Saraburi province. In 2013, CPF had a 25% share in the sausage market.

Betagro’s overseas expansion

Thailand’s Betagro Group has opened its first overseas Betagro Shop outlet in Vientiane, highlighting the group’s efforts at expanding ahead of the Asean Economic Community (AEC) at the end of 2015. President Vasit Taepaisitphongse said the group plans to increase the number of Betagro Shops in Thailand to 150 by the end of 2015, from 110 outlets nationwide at present. Betagro also launched a range of new food products under its premium S-Pure brand which include pig’s blood and pork and chicken soup concentrate.
