US January 2012 turkey meat exports increased 15% over January 2011 and 40% since 2009.

The number one export destination by region was North America which increased 19% since 2011. About 65% of United States (US) turkey meat exports went to the North America region.

US turkey meat exports to South America increased by the greatest percentage amount over other regions when comparing January 2012 and January 2011 time frames. The number one exported item was fresh/chilled turkey cuts which increased 31% when comparing January 2012 with January 2011.

Live Turkey Chick Imports

Even though total US live turkey chick imports for 2011 were 23% higher than 2010, they are down 15% compared to 2001. Canada continued to be number 1 exporter of turkey chicks to the US controlling over 99% of US imports in 2011. The United Kingdom’s 2011 total live turkey chick exports to the US declined 65% since 2010 and are down 95% to the US since their peak in 2006.

US January 2012 turkey chick imports all came from Canada and increased 130% over January 2011 while net poults* placed in the US for January 2012 were up 5% over January 2011. This compares to total January 2012 turkey chick imports down 11% and US January 2012 poult placements 7% lower than January 2001. Meanwhile, the USDA January 2012 fresh tom breast meat monthly weighted average price is 55% higher than January 2001’s.
