Catfish Processing Down 11 Percent from Last Year

Farm-raised catfish processed during October 2012 totaled 28.6 million pounds round weight, down 11 percent from October 2011. The average price paid to producers was 80.3 cents per pound for October 2012, up 1.0 cent from last month but 45.9 cents below a year ago.

Net pounds of processed fish sold during October 2012 totaled 13.8 million pounds, up 7 percent from the comparable month in 2011. Sales of fresh fish, at 5.43 million pounds, were up 18 percent from October 2011 and represented 39 percent of total sales. Frozen fish sales, at 8.37 million pounds, were up 1 percent from a year ago and accounted for the remaining 61 percent of total fish sales. Sales of whole fish represented 22 percent of the total fish sold, fillets accounted for 59 percent, and the remaining 19 percent were mostly steaks, nuggets, and value added products. The total end of the month inventory increased 9 percent from last month but was down 1 percent from a year ago.

The total fresh and frozen average price for October 2012 was $2.80, down 82 cents from a year ago. The October 2012 average price received by processors for total fresh fish was $2.68 per pound, down 92 cents from last year. Prices for fresh whole fish were $1.84 per pound, down 70 cents from October 2011. Prices for fresh fillets were down $1.12 from a year ago at $3.74 per pound. Total frozen fish averaged $2.87 per pound, down 76 cents from October 2011. Prices for frozen whole dressed fish were down 40 cents at $2.77 and frozen fillets at $3.29 per pound were down $1.13 from a year ago.

Imports for consumption of Ictalurus spp., Pangasius spp., and other catfish of the order Siluriformes for September 2012 totaled 22.9 million pounds, up 23 percent from the amount imported in September 2011. Imports were from Brazil, China, French Polynesia, Iceland, the Philippines, and Vietnam. The Ictalurus spp. imports totaled 202 thousand pounds, which were from China.

Fresh catfish fillet exports totaled 114 thousand pounds, with 50.5 thousand pounds going to Canada and the rest going to Jordan, Mexico, and Vietnam. Exports of frozen catfish fillets reported for September 2012 totaled 57.7 thousand pounds, going to the Bahamas, Vietnam, and St. Maarten.
