Resource Efficiency at Centre of Anuga FoodTec

More than 43,000 visitor are expected at the Anuga FoodTec exhibition that opened in Cologne, Germany this week.

The theme of the event is resource efficiency with many of the new developments in the meat and food industry demonstrating innovations in saving energy and reducing the impact on the environment of production.

The exhibition and seminars are also offering advice on the sustainable use of water as well as showing the latest advances in automation and robotics that are increasing efficiency in the meat and food processing industry.

The exhibition has more than 1500 exhibitors, a rise of 14 per cent on the last show in 2012.

This week has also seen the first prosecution in the UK over the horse meat scandal that rocked Europe more than two years ago.

As part of the repercussions from the scandal, the UK has now established a Food Crime Unit designed to investigate and clamp down on food fraud.

While there has been some legal action taken against some of those involved in the deception of substituting horse meat for beef in products across Europe, notably in the Netherlands and France, a EU-wide unit to ensure food fraud in Europe is clamped down upon has yet to be established and European eyes are expected to be turned towards the UK as the Food Crime Unit established itself.
