Concerns Raised in Europe over Pig Meat Market

Several European countries are still flouting animal welfare regulations of the European Union for the production of pig meat – two years after they came into force.

And the European Commission has not taken any action against those countries a year after final warning letters were sent out.

Last year, the European Commission wrote final legal warning letters to four countries that were not complying with the regulations to ban sow stalls – Belgium, Cyprus, Greece and France.

Initial warning letters had been sent to them in February 2013.

At the same time as the final warning letters were sent out, initial warning letters were sent to Slovenia and Finland.

This week the European Commission said that no further action has been taken since then.

“We can inform you that no further official steps have been taken against any of the non-compliant Member States,” a European spokesman for Health and Food Safety told TheMeatSite.

“All of them have communicated information to the Commission.

“The Commission services are closely monitoring the progress made by them and will take the steps necessary to achieve full compliance across the EU.”

At the same time over the last week, the European Commission has indicated that it could offer support to the pig sector that has been hit by the import ban by Russia imposed over the outbreak of African swine fever in some countries and also because of EU sanctions against Russia over the situation in Ukraine and Crimea.

While the Russian veterinary authorities have indicated an easing of the tough line over the sanitary controls imposed because of African swine fever, several pork producing countries in the EU have called for emergency support because EU pig meat and pigs are still excluded from the Russian market.

During the recent Agricultural Council meeting, some EU countries said that while steps had been taken for other agricultural sectors, difficulties were being encountered by the pig meat sector for which no market measures have so far been taken.
