Taking Major Steps towards Sustainable Beef

The sustainability of food and particularly the beef sector is being highlighted more and more as concerns grow over climate change, the deforestation of the rain forests and the need to feed a growing global population.

A major step forward was taken last month in Brazil at the Global Roundtable for Sustainable Beef (GRSB) when the multi-stakeholder group clarified what sustainability is.

A major player in the process was the National Cattlemen's Beef Association, helping to give the US producer a voice, as principles and criteria were ratified in Sao Paulo.

CEO of the Association, Forrest Roberts, said that sustainability means different things to different countries.

Even within the US, neighbours can have a very different approach.

"This is not about sending signals of mandates or production standards,” he said.

"What it is about is how we establish a common ground or a common framework to build on."

This week the fast food restaurant chain McDonald’s joined forces with Beef and Lamb New Zealand to provide sustainable beef to its customers.

Together with meat processors Silver Fern Farms and ANZCO Foods, Beef + Lamb New Zealand and McDonald’s New Zealand have established two sustainable beef integration programmes to demonstrate the key principles of sustainable beef production.

McDonald’s has initiated the programme with Beef + Lamb New Zealand, ANZCO Foods and Silver Fern Farms as part of its aspiration to source verified sustainable beef around the world.

Beef + Lamb New Zealand chief executive, Dr Scott Champion said like McDonald’s, sustainability is a top priority for New Zealand beef and sheep farmers.

“New Zealand farmers take great care of their land, and pride in the quality products they deliver. This sustainability programme will highlight a range of best practice activity, starting on the farm and following right through to the McDonald’s customer.”

The Committee on World Food Security at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN has also called for the High Level Panel of Experts to prepare a study on Sustainable agricultural development for food security and nutrition, including the role of livestock, to feed into CFS debates and the CFS Plenary session of October 2016.

As part of its report elaboration process, the HLPE is now calling for interested experts to candidate to the Project Team for this report.

The Project Team will be selected by end January 2015 and work from February 2015 to end of March 2016

  • Next week the newsletter will appear on Tuesday 23 December.
