Focus on Denmark

With the International Pig Seminar taking place at the Agromek show in Herning this week, attended by Chris Harris, our focus will be on the Danish pig meat sector.

Since the financial crisis of 2008, investment in the Danish pig sector has been low.

At present, the sector is being hit by the loss of the Russian market because of the sanctions imposed following the EU’s stance over Ukraine but it is also being challenged by the threat of pig diseases, which led to the establishment of wash-down posts for pig transport truck along the border with Germany.

The sector has also been hit by the threat of MRSA and antibiotic resistance, and now it faces new animal welfare measures that are to be introduced by the government.

“Animal welfare is still an issue and has been brought up by the new minister of agriculture and next year we will halve the use of antibiotics on the farm,” Martin Anderssen from the Danish Pig research Centre said during his presentation at the Seminar.

He explained that the main problems with under-investment had been in the finisher production units.

Dr Bent Nielsen, head of SPF Health Control and the Pig Diagnostic Lab at the Danish Pig Research Centre, told delegates at the International Pig Seminar about the wide range of health and biosecurity measures in the pig sector in Denmark.

The stakes have never been higher; last year, he said, Denmark exported 2.5 million weaners to Poland and had 244 transport journeys to Russia and 143 to Lithuania – all centres for African swine fever.

Denmark is also facing a number of other challenges regarding live exports, according to Martin Anderssen from the Danish Pig Research Centre.

He said that in 2010, Denmark slaughtered 20.2 million pigs in domestic slaughterhouses but by last year, the figure had dropped to just over 19 million. At the same time, the number of piglets going for export has risen from 7.5 million to 9.7 million.

“In 20 years, we won’t have slaughterhouses in Denmark,” he said.

The Danes are also in the process of setting more demanding standards on animal welfare.

While the EU regulations allow the use of traditional sow stalls for four weeks after service, the Danish pig sector is to demand that all sows must be loose in the service area in newly built facilities after 1 January next year - and all facilities will have to fall into line by 2035.

The new standards were explained at the Agromek Seminar by Asger Kjaer Nielsen, quality manager at the Danish Pig Research Centre.

There are further requirements over sprinkling systems, additional hospital space, covered creep area and specifications on rooting materials, and the Danish sector is experimenting with loose lactating sows and free farrowing, he added.

Earlier this year, the new agriculture minister in Denmark, Dan Jorgensen, called a welfare summit that laid down a series of objectives to improve animal welfare in pig production.

Meat company, Danish Crown Group, has announced its annual reports this week, commenting that it has posted satisfactory results for the year despite market disruption caused by the political situation in Russia.
