Global Agreement Reached on Principles for Sustainable Beef

At a meeting in Sao Paulo, Brazil, this week, the Global Roundtable for Sustainable Beef (GRSB) has agreed global principles and criteria for sustainable beef production.

GRSB's members have overwhelmingly approved global Principles and Criteria for defining sustainable beef and sustainable beef production practices.

Members of the global beef community, including representatives from every segment of the supply chain, have worked on this collaborative effort for more than a year-and-a-half to identify and define the core principles for sustainable beef production and delivery.

Ruaraidh Petre, GRSB executive director, said: “Arriving at a common definition, which includes five core principles and detailed criteria for sustainable beef, has been a difficult task and one which took a lot of hours and a great deal of negotiation.

“Our members are to be commended for their commitment to finding common ground and identify a clear path forward as we work to improve the sustainability of the global beef chain.”

Also in the news this week, Paraguay’s already high beef exports are forecast to strengthen further in 2015, breaking records.

Market analysts are predicting that strong export performance is expected to reach 360,000 tonnes next year, supported by greater availability and firm demand. Forecasts put next year's beef exports at record levels in 2015, reaching 360,000 tonnes.

Beef and cattle sectors in Spain are joining forces in a bid to defend domestic sales and consumption and boost exports by finding new markets.

In the dairy sector, industry experts have again defended milk’s nutritional value after a Swedish study linked milk consumption and lower life expectancy.

The trouble-torn country of Ukraine is facing more challenges than the political unrest that is being seen on televisions and in news reports around the world.

Market analyst, Sergey Feofilov from UkrAgroConsult told the recent Grain Outlook Conference in London that that the main difficulties facing the country are the cost and physical logistics of transporting and exporting the grain and other products.

Last but not least, the organisation Ladies In Pigs has this week received the David Black Award for its exceptional contribution to the pig industry of the United Kingdom. The Sausage Oscar, for services to bangers, was presented to Charles Baughan of Westaways Sausages.
