Editorial: Contaminated Meat Products Dominate Market Discussion

Two instances of meat product contamination have dominated the headlines over the last week - the discovery of horsemeat being substituted for beef in beef products and concerns by the Russia authorities over ractopamine in meat products from the US.

The discovery that some beef products - mainly frozen lasagne and spaghetti Bolognese - have been made with horse meat has caused a political furore across Europe.

The discovery was made in the UK, but the chain of production and the sourcing of the meat stretches back through processing plants in France to slaughterhouses in Romania.

The substitution of horse meat for beef has been described by the UK's Environment Secretary, Owen Patterson as either gross negligence of criminal activity.

The repercussions are continuing and will continue for some time to come, as the source and the reason for the contamination are unearthed.

While, at present, there is no apparent food safety issue, the consumer has been duped, labelling is incorrect and someone along the line has substituted cheaper horse meat for beef.

The UK's Food Standards Agency is testing horse meat for phenylbutazone (bute) in case of potential harmful contamination but to date nothing has been discovered.

However, in Russia pork, beef and turkey meat products have been banned from import this week because of concerns that ractopamine has been used in rearing the animals.

The beta-agonist helps to grow leaner meat more quickly and although declared safe by Codex Alimentarius, Russia together with the EU and several other countries are concerned about potential harmful effects.

The ban in meat products has caused a backlash from the US agriculture secretary, Tom Vilsack and the trade representative, Ron Kirk. They have called on Russia to abide by the World Trade Organisation ruling and to resume trade with the US.
