Editorial: Weather and Feed Costs Lead to Volatile Markets

Extreme weather conditions have been the driving force for severe food price spikes over the last five years.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations droughts and floods have hit cereal and grain production in the leading grain producing countries.

This in turn has had a knock on effect on the price and availability of animal feed affecting meat and food prices for processors and consumers.

The FAO together with the International Fund for Agricultural Development and the World Food Programme has now called for action and investment in areas to mitigate the potential for grain price volatility and for governments to avoid protectionist measures that can only help domestic markets in the short term and damage global food security in the long term.

However, while the FAO and other organisations are warning of future food price hikes, Australia has announced strong export earnings for agricultural products.

The Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences (ABARES) finds that exports earnings from the agricultural, fisheries, and forestry sectors are forecast to be around A$38.9 billion in 2012–13, which is a one per cent decline on 2011–12 exports but 21 per cent higher than the average over the previous five years (to 2010–11).

Brazil is also reporting an upturn in agricultural exports this month.

The average daily Brazilian agricultural exports in September rose by 0.9 per cent, from $ 1.109 billion by the second week of the month in 2011 to $1.118 billion this year.

In the first nine days of the month, sales totalled $ 10.065 billion, partly due to a rise in commodity sales of products such as soybean meal, meat (pork, beef and chicken) and tobacco.

However, in the US, a surge in hog slaughter numbers has put dramatic pressure on pork prices.

According to Steve Meyer and Len Steiner producers have been quite aggressive in marketing hogs following the spike in feed costs and this has started to pull supplies forward.

In the EU, pig meat markets appear stable with brisk demand from slaughter companies in the south and price increases for farmers in northern Europe and supplies appear scarcer.
