Editorial: Future of Companies in the Balance

The future of two major meat processing operations was hanging in the balance this week.

The Commercial Court in Quimper France was due to rule on the fate of the leading French poultry processor Doux. which is threatened by huge debts.

The court heard and considered 15 different takeover bids of Doux, as well as the proposed continuation of the activities of the company from its current CEO, Charles Doux, under the control of British bank Barclays.

One of the leading options is for a takeover by the consortium Sofiprotéol, which includes some of the other leading French poultry companies.

In the UK, talks have been progressing on the future of Halls of Broxburn, the pig meat processing plant that is part of the Vion Food Group.

Scottish Finance Secretary John Swinney said he was encouraged at the progress being made.

A taskforce is examining the company’s finances and Scottish Enterprise’s Scottish Manufacturing Advisory Service has been identifying potential process improvements and savings.

Scottish Enterprise and Scottish Development International have been exploring all options for the future of the plant and its businesses. The taskforce is also conducting an Economic Impact Assessment into the potential effects of any job losses, and is also working to ensure the security of the pork supply chain.

In the US, ConAgra Foods is to acquire the Bertolli and P.F. Chang’s Home Menu frozen meals businesses from Unilever for $265 million.

With annual sales approaching $300 million, the Bertolli and P.F. Chang’s businesses are leaders in the frozen multi-serve meals segment.

The agreement includes a license for the use of the Bertolli brand name and the transfer of Unilever’s existing license with P.F. Chang’s for use of the P.F. Chang’s Home Menu brand name.

The beleaguered poultry processor, Pilgrim's Pride, now part of the Brazilian JBS group, has recorded a profit in the second quarter of the year, after reporting a significant loss for the same period last year.

The company saw net income of $69.4 million during the second quarter of 2012 compared to a loss of $128.1 million the prior year. Net debt was reduced to $1.18 billion in the period, reflecting a year-to-date reduction in net debt of $248.0 million.
