Editorial: US Farm Bill gets Go-ahead

The US Farm Bill finally achieved the assent from the Senate agriculture committee last week.

Now, the bill goes forward to the full senate for approval, with what appears to be almost universal approval from the political and farming community.

The bill, entitled the Agriculture Reform, Food and Jobs Act of 2012, reforms farm policy, consolidates and streamlines various programmes and, the politicians claim ambitiously, will reduce the country's deficit by $23 billion.

The new bill eliminates direct payment to farmers, who will no longer be paid for crops they are not growing and will not be paid for acres that are not actually planted.

However, the bill also offers farmers a large measure of protection.

Also in the US, the recent discovery of a fourth case of BSE appears to have had little affect on beef trade.

Acording to Meat and Livestock Australia analysts, the Japanese market was keeping an eye on the situation but there has been little true concern.

In South Korea, despite calls by one politician for a ban on US beef, consumption has not been affected by the latest bovine spongiform encephalopathy case, although demand for US beef was down.

The Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said sales of beef at the country's eight largest retailers, including Lottemart, Homeplus and Nonghyup Hanaro Mart, rose 3.3 per cent last week.

It said sales of beef from domestically raised cattle moved up 3.5 per cent with imports also gaining 4.4 per cent, although demand for US beef plunged 19.8 per cent.

GLOBAL POULTRY TRENDS – Slow Population Growth but Rise in Processed Egg Uptake in Europe
With the population likely to remain fairly constant, the key feature of the egg market in Europe in the coming years is the rise in the consumption of egg products by the region’s residents, according to Terry Evans in the last part of his analysis of the European egg industry. Some estimates point to the proportion reaching as high as 40 per cent in certain countries by 2025.
Food Safety Audits and Meat Plant Characteristics

German Food Production on Sustainable Course
Based on statistics from the German Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection, the German food production industry used a total of 217,656 terajoules of energy in 2009.
Reference Guide for Solving Poultry Processing Problems
To produce a quality poultry meat product from a live bird involves a series of efficiently performed, specific tasks in a sanitary manner from catching to the final product. Because of the complexity of production and processing procedures, several factors may reduce carcass yield, carcass grade and the company’s overall profit margin, writes Julie Northcutt, Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Georgia.
Scientific Opinion on Safety of Cecure on Raw Poultry Products
Following a request from the European Commission, the Panel on Biological Hazards (BIOHAZ Panel) and the Panel on Food Contact Materials, Enzymes, Flavourings and Processing Aids (CEF Panel) of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) were asked to deliver a Scientific Opinion on an application dossier submitted by the company Safe Foods Corporation for approval of the use of the preparation Cecure® for removal of microbial surface contamination on raw poultry products.
Microbiological Surveillance of Raw Milk
Real-time PCR reduced analysis time compared to culture methods and may be a useful tool for microbiological testing on farm, according to researchers in Italy. The PCR method was more sensitive than culture methods in detecting E. coli O157 in all samples tested.
