Editorial: Sustainable Pig Meat Industry Centre of World Conference

As more than 300 delegates from around the world met in Bonn last week for the World Pork Conference, the major issues facing the pig meat industry surrounded the effects of the global economic crisis, rising feed grain prices and sustainability.

The speakers at the conference also raised concerns about the global trading relations and the growth of non-tariff trade barriers.

However, for European producers and processors there were also concerns about the implementation of European Commission regulations of loose housing for pigs and the effects that and uneven implementation would have on prices and the market.

This week in the European Commission, new proposals for the Common Agricultural Policy were put forward by the agriculture commissioner Dacian Ciolos.

He said that the draft proposal aims to strengthen the competitiveness, sustainability and permanence of agriculture throughout the EU, making the CAP simpler and more efficient.

In China, the authorities have cracked down on illegal slaughtering, ensuring that villages only source meat from official slaughter houses and that inspections are tightened up to stop fraudulent and illegal certificates for meat being issued.

Finally, this week, the world's leading meat and food processors gathered in Cologne, Germany for the leading food exhibition, Anuga, allowing the various national meat industry marketing bodies to show the quality of their products to the world.
