Editorial: US to Introduce Clearer Meat Additive Labelling

US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service is proposing a new rule to give clearer indication about additives in raw meat products.

FSIS wants to establish common, easy-to-understand names for raw meat and poultry products that include injections, marinades or have otherwise incorporated added solutions, which may not be visible to the consumer.

The food safety service said that some labels do not clearly identify if a solution has been added to a raw product to enhance flavour or texture.

As a result, consumers may be buying raw meat and poultry products with higher sodium content than they realise.

Also in the US, concern is gathering pace over the lack of movement to ratify free trade agreements with South Korea, Colombia and Panama.

The President and CEO of the American Meat Institute J. Patrick Boyle said that four years of trade benefits for US farmers, ranchers and food processors have been forfeited because of inaction on the pending free trade agreements.

In China, five people convicted of illegally dealing in and producing clenbuterol for use as a feed additive to produce leaner meat have received punishments that included a suspended death penalty.

The Intermediate People's Court of Jiaozuo, in Henan province, found the defendants guilty of "endangering public security by using dangerous means".

In Russia, the meat import quotas for next year will be cut as the pig and poultry industries increase production.

Prime Minister Putin said that Russia will import 330,000 tonnes of poultry meat and 350,000Coo tonnes of pig meat next year.
