Editorial: G20 Fights Agricultural Price Volatility
At the G20 Farm Ministers meeting last wek, 20 of the most powerful economies in the world agreed an action plan to fight against the volatility of agricultural prices.
Together, the G-20 nations committed to increasing agricultural production through use of improved practices and technologies and a commitment to new and expanded research and development.
Meanwhile, the European Commission (EC), FAO, the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the World Food Programme (WFP) have signed a new Strategic Framework of Cooperation to increase the capacity of the international community to deliver effective, coordinated, timely and sustainable support to food security and nutrition in Rome this week.
By joining forces, the four partners are seeking to achieve higher collective impact on the world's food security.
The Strategic Framework of Cooperation highlights the key priorities for food security and nutrition where all four partners will work together particularly on the basis of their converging objectives and mandates.
This week there were moves for the beef trade between Canada and South Korea to reopen.
However, the opening up of the market for Canada has struck a sour note with the US beef industry, which is putting more pressure on the governemnt to ratify a free trade agreement with the Koreans.
There is concern that the US will be left behind as more markets are opening up to other meat exporting nations.
