Editorial: Talks to Stabilise Beef Market in Europe

Talks in Europe over the last week looked at how market instruments can be adapted to stabilise the sector as it suffers extreme price instability caused by input cost hikes that have been made worse by drought conditions in many European countries.

The special meeting of the European Commission’s Advisory Group on the Beef Sector was convened by Agriculture Commissioner Dacian Ciolos.

The news comes as EU beef imports during the nine months to March were reported to be down by 13 per cent year-on-year to 139,654 tonnes.

In the UK, the National Beef Association is continuing to raise concerns over the introduction of video image analysis for carcase classification.

There are concerns that carcases going through the system, which has been introduced in Northern Ireland and is expected to be used across the UK shortly, have not been properly dressed.

In the US, a number of senators have called for action to raise the blocks on exports of pork to Russia.

Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa, with Senator Ben Nelson of Nebraska and 26 other senators, is urging the top US trade official to work to lift Russian trade barriers to US pork products.

Senator Grassley said: "Russia's unjustified position against US pork has blocked products from plants that account for 60 per cent of US pork production capacity. Russia wants to join the World Trade Organization. One of the issues Russia needs to address before joining is its unwarranted barriers to US pork."
