Editorial: Trade Bans over Dioxin Scare Lifted

Repercussions of the dioxin contamination of feed in Germany at the beginning of the year have been felt around the world as trade blocks have been imposed on pig meat products from Germany.

However, over the last week Hong Kong, the Philippines and Serbia announced they are to lift all import restrictions they introduced after the incident.

The countries have received the necessary information and reassurance that the situation is under control and that products can be safely imported from the EU, according to European Commission Trade officials.

A fact-finding mission by the Food and Veterinary Office (FVO), the European Commission inspection service of the Health and Consumers Directorate General, took place in Germany from 26 to 28 January 2011.

Trading of shares in China's largest meat processor was suspended this week after an illegal additive was allegedly found in meat products in an affiliate of the company.

Shares of Shenzhen-listed Henan Shuanghui Investment & Development Co Ltd were suspended from being traded at 9:30am on Wednesday after China Central Television reported one of its affiliate, Jiyuan Shuanghui Food Co Ltd, purchased pigs fed with Clenbuterol, according to the suspension notice.

Last week, the European Parliament warned the European Commission that any trade agreements reached must not affect Euroepan farmers.

The MEPs issued a specific warning about the effects of the trade talks with the Mercosur countries in South America and criticised the recent agreement with Morocco.
