Three Sacked over Animal Abuse Allegations

Smithfield Foods this week sacked two employees and their supervisor for violating Smithfield Animal Welfare policies.

The move follows the revelation by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) in secretly taken video footage of alleged instances of animal abuse at a Smithfield facility in Waverly, Virginia.

Following the HSUS revelations, Smithfield Foods reiterated its strict animal welfare policies and procedures.

Dennis Treacy, Chief Sustainability Officer for Smithfield Foods, said: "At Smithfield Foods our number one priority is food safety along with the care and safety–of our employees and our animals–at all of our facilities. We have a long history of leading the industry with innovative programmes to demonstrate that leadership in order to provide our customers with a safe and abundant food supply."

In Australia, National Union of Workers' employees at the JBS Swift plant in Brooklyn, Melbourne have now been locked out by the company for 20 days.

The 140 workers are protesting over a two per cent pay offer and the forced move to Saturday work on a reduced penalty.

Victorian Branch Secretary Tim Kennedy spoke to members at a lunchtime Christmas party, which was held at the picket site this week.

In Denmark, Danish Crown is to open negotiations with the employees in Hadsund on relocation of production to a closed Tulip sausage plant in Sdr. Borup.

However, the company was also experiencing problems with worker disputes when government officials, who monitor work at the Ringsted, Esbjerg and Herning plants, walked out in a dispute over charges.

•The next issue of TheMeatSite newsletter will appear on 5 January. We wish all our readers, sponsors and partners a happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year.
