Editorial: Supermarkets Attacked over Price Cutting

The UK's National Beef Association has launched an attack on the supermarket sector for offering beef and food products on the market at under their cost price.

The association is concerned that if the supermarkets continue to undersell beef as a lure, eventually it will be the consumers who will suffer, as beef cattle disappear from the farms.

The processing sector has called on the Food Standards Agency that controls meat inspection to control its own costs before hitting the industry with the full cost of inspection.

The British Meat Processors Association has called for serious consideration to be given to an alternative model of delivery of official controls, including delivery by a private sector provider, leaving the FSA to focus on its principal role as a science-based food safety regulator.

In New Zealand, Beef+ Lamb New Zealand is predicting that demand for beef will continue with exports driving the market.

For the US the value of beef exports has remained solid through July despite a slight dip. Exports are 40 per cent up on 2009 levels.

In the global pig meat market, Ireland has seen strong pork sales to Japan in the second half of the year.
