Editorial: Investing in Beef Promotion

The Canadian Government is investing C$3 million in new marketing initiatives for the Canadian beef industry.

Projects are expected to include supporting trade missions to access emerging markets; producer education to meet consumer demands; new product development and branding; and consumer education initiatives to increase the demand for beef domestically.

US meat exporters are reporting that the Philippines is now becoming one of the hottest emerging markets for pork and beef exports.

The US Meat Export Federation said it was very "bullish" about the Philippine market following success at the recent World Food Expo 2010.

Australia, meanwhile, is seeing its exports of beef to the South East Asian market continue to climb.

In July, beef exports to SE Asia and China rose by 18 per cent to 13,231 tonnes.

The New Zealand beef industry has joined up with fast food restaurant chain Burger King to promote its beef products in Taiwan.

However, in the UK, the farming unions have called for an immediate rise in beef prices because they say producers are operating below the cost of production.

Distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) had little effect on loin quality but did decrease belly quality, bacon processing characteristics and fat stability, according to Leick and co-authors. Ractopamine had no negative effects on these characteristics and does not interact with DDGS.

Italy - Poultry Outlook 2010
