Editorial: EU Encourages Animal Welfare in Latin America

The European Commission is encouraging low-cost practices and educational strategies to promote animal welfare in Latin America by organising workshops.

The European Commission, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences of the São Paulo State University (FCAV-UNESP) are organising two workshops with the aim to improve animal welfare in Latin America.

In the UK, the Food Standards Agency has produced two new pieces of guidance that will reduce the administrative burdens of the meat industry and farmers, helping them to comply with the law while maintaining consumer protection.

The meat products regulation guidance aims to make the process of correctly labelling any added ingredients easier.

The second piece of FSA guidance is a one-page document that will help farmers to keep only the necessary records on animal feed, helping them to save a significant amount of time and money.

The Brazilian government has announced that they are voluntarily suspending exports of manufactured meat products from Brazil to the USA.

The suspension is expected to last until the Brazilian and US authorities can meet to discuss the way that biological and chemical residues in these products can be tested.

The ban on exports has had a small effect on trade for the giant JBS group and has seen Marfrig reorganise its export trade to the US from other countries.
