Editorial: Industry Asks to be Given a Chance

The Scottish meat industry has called on the authorities to give it a chance.

Speaking at the annual meeting of the Scottish Association of Meat Wholesalers, President Alan Craig called for a more even handed approach in meat inspection without increasing the financial burden on the industry and assistance in procuring livestock that had come under pressure since decoupling of subsidies.

Also in the UK over the last week, the major British poultry company, 2 Sisters, a subsidiary of Boparan Holdings Ltd, has announced its intention to buy the Dutch-based Storteboom Group.

This latest acquisition will add a further six sites to the Group and will also turn us into a £1 billion-plus turnover business.

Across Europe, the general consensus from the latest European beef forecast group indicated stability across a number of the key markets for 2010 with a number of Member States anticipating some recovery in beef consumption as the year progresses.

The European Commission anticipates that net production will ease slightly in 2010 following a two per cent decline in production in 2009.

However, some key beef producers, including France and Germany will experience a decline in output in 2010.

In China, the government has been buying pork in order to support the industry and prices.

Subtitled 2010 Japanese Beef and Pork Market Outlook, this report revises the 2009 livestock annual report, without fundamental changes. The deflationary trend that began last year is not expected to end soon, according to this GAIN report from USDA Foreign Agricultural Service.
