Editorial: "Flawed" Cancer Report Causes Anger

A high profile report which suggests possible links between meat and cancer has been found to be significantly flawed by leading academics.

The World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) 2007 report has been consistently cited as proof of a perceived link between red and processed meat consumption and risk of colorectal cancer (CRC). However, despite now privately acknowledging a number of errors and that these will be taken into consideration as part of an ongoing review, the charity has said it is not planning to inform the public and policymakers directly of the flaws.

In the UK, EBLEX Chairman John Cross and counterpart at BPEX Stewart Houston, wrote to Professor Martin Wiseman, medical and scientific adviser at WCRF, asking WCRF to acknowledge publically the flaws in the report.

IFFA 2010 the exhibition for the meat processing industry will open its doors in Frankfurt am Main from 8 to 13 May.

Messe Frankfurt the organisers of IFFA 2010 are taking an optimistic view of this event for the international meat-processing sector, as registrations have been received from all international market leaders.

In the US, meat, food and commodity processing giant Cargill has begun piloting a third party remote video auditing (RVA) programme as a food safety tool in its North American beef plants.

Cargill is already using RVA to monitor animal welfare practices and is finishing up the installation of the technology at its 10 beef-harvest plants in North America.

Based on the positive results in the animal welfare area, Cargill decided to extend the RVA technology to monitor food safety practices and is piloting the project at beef facilities in Fresno, California and Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
