Editorial: Russia Sets Out Self-sufficiency Plan

Russian President, Dmitry Medvedev, has set out a plan to boost domestic food production and reduce the country's dependence on imports.

Russia' new food plan, which was worked out in line with its national security strategy until 2020, aims to increase domestic production of grain to 95 per cent of the country's requirements, sugar to 80 per cent, vegetable oil to 80 per cent, meat and meat products to 85 per cent, milk and dairy products to 90 per cent and fish products to 80 per cent.

In the US, the beef industry last week spelt out the urgent need it has to counter the threats that are coming from various anti-meat and other interest groups.

At the National Cattlemen's Beef Association Conference in San Antonio, Chairman of the Cattlemen's Beef Board Lucinda Williams said that the industry needs the beef checkoff system and it needs it to be responsive to everyone in it.

She said the industry needs to listen to its customers and it needs to be proactive.

She said the industry has to address the needs of the industry by providing a knowledge base and it needs to be prepared to respond to the resources of the industry's opponents and the anti meat agenda of much of the popular media.

A new report in the poultry industry in the US has shown that the injuries and Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) among workers on the poultry line is decreasing as new ergonomic practices have been introduced.

The study, Ergonomics in the Poultry Industry: A Review of 25 Years of Industry Efforts, describes the industry's efforts in the prevention and early treatment of MSDs.
