Australian Pig Meat Sector Targets Imports

AUSTRALIA - The Australian pig sector could take market share from processed imported pork products over the next five years.

ABC reports that it is one of the goals being set by pig farmers at a national series of strategy meetings.

Australian Pork Limited's next five-year strategy will begin in the 2014-15 financial year and APL's strategic planning road show with farmers concluded in Tasmania Wednesday night (30 October).

APL's general manager of research and innovation, Darryl D'Souza, said regaining market share by product differentiation, has emerged as a common goal.

Dr D'Souza said while the industry shrunk 20 per cent during the last major Australian drought, there's scope for some import replacement now.

He said the industry is already developing plans for effective branding and labelling to secure greater share of the domestic market.

"Processed pork is a large component of pork eaten in Australia," he said.

"We believe we can take more market share from imported pork that goes into processing."

Pork production is a small part of the Australian meat sector, with gross annual earnings of just $1billion.

Australian Pork Limited says while sow numbers remain stable, pig meat production in Australia is beginning to climb.

"We've seen three years of stable pig numbers," Dr D'Souza said.

"In the past we've seen a typical supply chain and demand reaction.

"It's quite pleasing to have a stable production base, so that allows us a very different take on planning around some of our activities."
