Slaughter & Beef Consumption Up in Argentina

16 March 2012

ARGENTINA - With favourable data for slaughter and consumption of beef, the latest monthly report of the Chamber of Industry and Trade Meat and Meat Products of Argentina (Ciccra) considers that the worst of the crisis is over.

"The year began with a slaughter of some 976,000 cattle. For the third time in four months, it was higher than the same month last year, signaling that the worst of the crisis is behind us," says Miguel Schiariti.

The increase would have been slightly over 10 per cent annually, which means they would have slaughtered nearly 90,000 head more than in January 2011, reports Lanacion.

With respect to females in total slaughter, in the first month of the year it was 39.3 per cent and stood 0.3 percentage points below the record of January 2011. "That is, the process continued the retention of cows during the start up of the calendar year," said the Mr Schiariti.
