Farmers Call for Early End to Dispute

02 March 2012

NEW ZEALAND - New Zealand farmers are calling for a swift resolution to the dispute between the Meat Workers Union and meat processor Affco.

The workers have been locked in a dispute over pay and work contracts.

This week, Federated Farmers national president Bruce Wills told NZ City that the farming community wants to see the dispute resolved sooner than later.

"There's also of course the issue of stock that needs to be processed being held up by this sort of dispute," he told NZ City.

"One thing we have been working hard on in this industry for a number of years is trying to get farmers to be loyal to their processors of choice because that's a bit difficult if they've got industrial action."

Mr Wills said the farmers are worried that there will not be adequate staffing to process the animals being sent to AFFCO.
