Processor Buys Back Meat Plant

03 October 2011

NEW ZEALAND - New Zealand's largest meat processor, Silver Fern Farms (SFF) is buying back the Frasertown sheep processing plant in the northern Hawke's Bay.

The moves follows SFF's investment in the Waitoa beef plant from the Wallace Corporation and is a turn around from the company's restructuring in 2007 to 2008 where it was reducing processing overcapacity at plants including its Belfast lamb and mutton site in Christchurch, according to a report on Stuff Business Day.

In the report, SFF chief executive Keith Cooper said SFF's ownership of Frasertown would reduce the distances of transporting sheep for processing in the area and allow it to provide full processing services for farmers.

He said the co-operative had completed its restructuring phase and was choosing its opportunities to reinvest in the business and be more profitable.

Mr Cooper said Frasertown was a profitable plant and SFF had plans to grow the business.
