Exports of Beef Products Doubled

MEXICO - From January to July 2011, exports of beef products recorded an accumulated 59,026 tonnes, almost double the exports in the same period last year (29,645 tonnes), according to the National Health Service, Safety and Food Quality (SENASA).

The body within the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA) said that throughout 2010, exports were 60,096 tons. The country has 391 active TIF establishments in 27 states, of which 36 are dedicated to the slaughter of cattle.

Between 2009 and July 2011, 154,204 tonnes of meat of cattle, from the Establishments Federal Inspection Type (TIF), were exported to countries like Korea, US, Canada, Japan, Russia, Viet Nam, Hong Kong, Luanda, Panama, Puerto Rico and Costa Rica, which has opened market for its safety and quality.

Mexican Livestock plays an important role in the national economy, as in 2010 33 per cent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was from agriculture.

The production of beef has been growing 13 per cent as, in 2003, there were 1,503,750 tons and in 2010 production reached 1,750,512 tons.

In 2010, 37 per cent of the total value of meat production of the major commercial livestock species was generated.

The production chain of beef includes several stages that can be grouped into three: the production of cattle, the conversion of muscle to meat during processing, and marketing.

The beef production is supported by the use of 55 per cent of the country's pasture for breeding and fattening cattle, the country has a feedlot capacity to end nearly three million head of cattle a year.

Domestic beef cattle sector generates direct and related employment. In the intensive phase of the chain generates 5,628 in the TIF, 5,000 in the cutting and packing, and 45,041 jobs in the marketing of meat.

In addition, beef production also generated 191,185 jobs in agriculture.
