Argentinean Beef Consumption To Remain Low

ARGENTINA - Argentinean beef consumption will remain low at least until 2014, as a result of restricted supplies driven by the loss of 11 million cattle during the last four years according to Infocampo.

According to research by local analysts, although local consumers have accepted the higher beef prices (redirecting considerable volumes from export markets), beef supplies will not be able to satisfy previous consumption levels of more than 70kg/person per annum in the medium term.

However, consumption is now expected to recover to averages of around 55kg/person per annum during the next three years, says Meat and Livestock Australia.

In addition, Argentina's cattle associations have embarked on programmes to increase beef production, in an effort to take advantage of the supply shortage in both the domestic and export markets.

Although consumption of other proteins such as chicken has increased slightly (fuelled by the soaring beef prices), pork consumption remains low as Argentina's swine industry is still developing, with imports still needed to satisfy domestic consumption.
