29 October 2010

PAKISTAN - The Department of Veterinary Services (DVS), Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry of Malaysia have approved an Abattoir and Processing Plant of Pakistan for export of halal meat to Malaysia.

According to Daily Times of Pakistan, the Department of Veterinary Services, Malaysia has informed the Pakistan High Commission that as a result of the inspections of abattoirs and processing plants in Pakistan by DVS and Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM), the Zenith Associates of Lahore, have been approved for export of frozen de-glanded and deboned beef to Malaysia.

High Commissioner for Pakistan in Malaysia, Masood Khalid, described it as a significant development in the ongoing cooperation between the two countries, adding that this will open a formal channel for export of meat from Pakistan to Malaysia.

The high commissioner said that Pakistan and Malaysia are ideally placed with complementary resources and capabilities to work together for making ingress into the multi-trillion world Halal market through cooperation in sectors such as food and agriculture, livestock and dairy products, food and beverages, halal meat and meat-based products.

He said that Pakistan being an agriculture country, can be a source for agro-based products such as fruits, vegetables, milk, livestock, including sheep, goat, buffalos, cows, camels, lentils and cereals, whereas, Malaysia with its technological knowhow and marketing skills could invest in Pakistan in the development of Halal-based infrastructure.

The two countries could enter into joint ventures, he said.

A three-member team, comprising officers from Department of Veterinary Services (DVS), Jabatan Kemajuan Islam, Malaysia (JAKIM) and Ministry of Health, Malaysia had visited Pakistan in April to inspect the abattoirs and the gelatin manufacturing facilities in Pakistan, as a final requirement to accord them Halal Certification to export meat and products of animal origin to Malaysia.

Earlier, the Penang International Halal Hub (PIHH) of Malaysia and Sindh Board of Investment (SBI) of Pakistan had also signed a memorandum of understanding in Karachi in August with a view to broaden cooperation in the halal industry in Pakistan.

Daily Times reports that Pakistan and Malaysia had also signed two memoranda of understanding and one letter of intent to promote Halal business between the two countries during the visit of Minister of Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry of Malaysia, Datuk Seri Noh Bin Haji Omar in Pakistan in December 2009.
