WMC REPORT - Call for Standardisation on Residue Tests

28 September 2010

ARGENTINA - The Brazilian beef industry has called for the International Meat Secretariat to work together with the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations and World Health Organisation to set standard testing procedures to test for residues, writes TheMeatSite senior editor, Chris Harris.

Speaking during the IMS Beef Committee meeting as a prelude to the World Meat Congress in Buenos Aires, Sebastiao Costa Guedes, the President of the Brazilian National Beef Cattle Council ( CNPC) said that Brazil had experienced problems over residues in meat in recent times.

He said the industry had been coming under pressure from both campaigning groups and the media to resolve the problem.

However, he said that there is a global problem with residues, because many countries follow different standards and do not follow the guidelines laid down by Codex Alimentarius.

He said that some countries throw up technical barriers to the trade in meat because of concerns over antibiotic residues.

He said the global industry needs to avoid the use of technical barriers to market access.

"The IMS, FAO and WHO should work together to get standard tests. We need standardisation of the testing procedures," Mr Guedes said.
