Pig Slaughterhouse Closed by Salmonella

26 October 2009

BELGIUM - A pig slaughterhouse halted production last week following the discovery of Salmonella Ohio contamination.

The Belgian Food Safety Authority (AFSCA) has ordered a pig abattoir in Liege to halt all slaughtering activities after a significant number of carcases were found to be contaminated by Salmonella Ohio.

The Intercommunale des Abattoirs de Liege abattoir had operations suspended on 15 October and will not be allowed to resume operations until the contamination problem is solved, said AFSCA.

AFSCA also pointed out that Salmonella Ohio infections have been on the increase in the Belgian population.
